So, as another way to procrastinate on my 5x18 fic, have some episode reactions and assorted squee.

Belated thoughts on Point of No Return:

Pretty much.  I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't been said already and better.  It was a good episode, not phenomenal, but I wasn't expecting that.  It was a good, solid episode that was a lot of fun, with angst and humour and plot development and treats for the fans (the fanservice and slash OMG, "Blow me, Cas", "Last person who looked at me like that I got laid", "erotically co-dependent", the fight and wall-slams, Castiel ripping his shirt off ).
And they made good use of Castiel, which was awesome.  So much Cas in this episode, so much awesome.  Also, I adored Castiel being bitchy and BAMF.  All the awesome fight scenes.  The way he kept glaring at Dean.  Slamming the door bitchily when Sam told him to leave. &hearts &hearts ♥

Now.  Hammer of the Gods.

Was also a really good episode.  Although, first of all, thank you Show for once again bringing people back only to kill them off.  Argh.

I think it would be possible, though, to bring back Gabriel (although I don't think they will) given his ongoing theme of not really being dead, if he could manage to trick Lucifer into thinking he'd killed him, which idk.  Given the focus on Kali's binding magic and then saving her, maybe they wanted to leave that possibility open.  Either way, I'm not feeling his loss the way everyone else seems to be.  I mean, he was a great character and had a lot of potential and I think there are some missed possibilities there with Team Free Will, but I don't think there was enough there for me to form an emotional attachment and to mourn his loss.  Not as much as there would have been if, say, they had actually given him the development to make believable the transition from the person he was in his previous episodes and where he was at the end of 5x08 to sacrificing himself for humanity.

Also, and this is possibly kind of minor but, I'm really not liking the archangels calling each other "little brother" and them raising each other.  It annoyed me in 5x13 when Michael said it and it annoyed me again in this one.  Because in m head, and this is consistent with Christian myth I think, all of the angels were created together, they're all the same age.  I don't mind -- actually like -- if the archangels call Castiel or one of the other angels "little brother" because there's this divide of power and association between the "common" angels and the archangels, and a condescending "little brother" is just used as a sort of shorthand, as an easy English approximation.  But I tend to consider all of the archangels as more or less equals even if Michael and Lucifer are the most powerful and most beloved.

What else.  I really liked the whole god thing.  With all the focus on Judeo-Christian theology these past two seasons, I liked that they brought back the sort of all-religion theme that they had before, because I had been wondering how the show would fit current canon in with things like the tricksters and the pagan gods -- I didn't actually expect them to bring it up at all.  I don't mind that Lucifer was able to easily kill all those other gods (related: Marksha was really fucking epic and I always love seeing him, I wish there could be more), though, because in my mind, power comes from belief, and a lot of people believe in Lucifer whereas the other gods don't have many followers remaining.  I'm not sure how Kali fits into that, though, because while she did seem to put up a fight against Lucifer, Hinduism is one of the major world religions and...well, I suppose Christianity is still bigger.  (ETA:  I forgot about Ganesh, so there goes that theory.  Ganesh is a big god.  But then, he also seems to be a peaceful god so maybe...)  It would make it strange that she's consorting with these puny Norse and Roman gods, though, rather than, idk, Shiva and Buddha (who isn't a god, but receives a lot of worship and stuff so would conceivably have his own, powerful avatar) and all those who I don't know much about but are out there.
Also, this would mean that Lucifer didn't really kill those gods as long as they still have some believers, although they might have much of their power and history stripped given that they would have remembered things that have long been lost.
Possibly my Discworld is showing, but I loved the concept there and I tend to apply it everywhere else too.

Two more things.
At first I was very disappointed that Castiel wasn't going to be in the episode, but I'm ok with it now because I don't think he would have had a place in it.  Mostly I'm just really happy that he got a mention.
I really liked Baldur calling Gabriel "Loki".  It adds this other dimension to their interactions in the episode, which would probably be interesting to explore given that they both have relationships with Kali.  Mostly though, it's because I just really love the trickster archetype and Loki is my favourite Norse god.  ...But it does make me wonder what Baldur and Odin thought about Loki being free, given that that is only supposed to happen at the beginning of Ragnarök.

Bleh.  That was long and hopefully coherent.

I think I'll leave Doctor Who till another day, maybe after I see the third episode next weekend.  Suffice to say that I'm really enjoying it and I think Eleven is fabulous and I also really like Amy Pond (and yay! for less romance).  I like air atmosphere of age and legend that this run seems to have.  I'm really looking forward to 5x03, too, because the only Dalek episodes I've seen so far are from the First Doctor.
However, I hope they do something about the sound mixing because I keep missing bits because of the background music.  And I don't really like what they've done with the music at the beginning.
Also also.  I still find myself missing the spartan white of the classic!Who TARDIS, but I feel myself more willing to forgive that now because omg STEAMPUNK!TARDIS.
